Fleas and your pets

pets, cats, dogs, kittens, puppies, fleas

If your pet has fleas it’s not a fun time for them or your family. Fleas can spread throughout your house quickly and the entire family will suffer. Fortunately, there are several natural remedies that can help eliminate fleas from getting comfortable in your home. Once they have infested the home they can be difficult to get rid of.

When a pet owner finds a flea on their pet they must realize that when there’s one there’s much more somewhere in the home. Fleas love to bring along their friends and they can attack your cat or dog when your pet is outside or if they are near another animal with fleas. It’s important to understand how a natural repellent will be effective and safe for your pet and family. Natural remedies are safe just remember sometimes it takes several attempts before you achieve the result.

Be sure to give your pet a bath and comb them on a regular basis. If the pet has fleas dip the comb in soapy water and comb thoroughly. Just be sure not to get it in the animal’s eyes. I have found that Dawn dish detergent works very well. Using natural deterrents which includes citrus products is important. Just boil water and pour it over a sliced lemon making cuts in the skin so the citrus oil can be released. Let it sit and soak then take a sponge and apply it to the animal being sure that you rub on the skin. It will kill the fleas!. Comb then repeat until there are no fleas. If you see any irritation on the skin of your pet then stop.

Brewer’s yeast and garlic or apple cider vinegar will work.  Just add small amounts to the pet’s food. This will repel fleas nicely but just remember not to give cats any garlic.  Your pet may not be thrilled with the taste so observe their reaction. If they refuse to eat the food then try something else.

Or try an organic shampoo with a cedar oil base. Most health food stores will carry the oil or you can get it online. Fleas don’t care for the scent of cedar and it will keep them away. Also, if you buy organic natural cedar chips add it to your pet’s bed. Any cedar product will work but be sure to read the product label and make sure that it’s not toxic and won’t hurt the animal. Some companies may sneak in a chemical that can be harmful.

Lastly, you can control the fleas outside in your yard by using nematodes which are worms that are safe and you can spread them around your yard. They kill the flea larvae so the fleas won’t live to adulthood. That way your animals will not be bringing any unwanted visitors into your house.
